Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged decisive action to curb the rising wave of online abuse targeting women and girls, as the world marks the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
In a statement shared on social media, Tinubu highlighted this year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls,” describing digital abuse as a growing but often invisible threat. She noted that many women and girls continue to face bullying, blackmail, stalking and gender-based hate across online platforms.
“Digital spaces should foster genuine human connection, facilitate learning and promote productivity, not fear,” she said, stressing that both online and offline violence erodes dignity, safety and potential.
Tinubu expressed solidarity with survivors and commended individuals and organisations working to end gender-based violence.
She called on government institutions, especially the legislature and judiciary, as well as technology companies, civil society groups and Nigerians at large to take bold steps to ensure safe and inclusive digital environments.
“Happy International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2025,” she added.
