Rivers Police Warn Public Against Fake Officers, Issue Hotlines for Reporting Extortion

-

The Rivers State Police Command has raised the alarm over a disturbing trend involving individuals impersonating police officers to extort members of the public across the state.

In a statement issued on January 30, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the command had received reports of suspects dressed in black attire and posing as police officers while intimidating and extorting unsuspecting citizens.

Describing the development as deeply concerning, CSP Iringe-Koko said the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adewole Adepoju, has activated robust mechanisms to monitor, identify, apprehend and prosecute those involved in the illegal activities to the full extent of the law.

The police spokesperson stressed that no individual, regardless of any claimed affiliation, is authorised to search citizens’ personal devices such as mobile phones or laptops on the road or at checkpoints. She also warned that it is unlawful for anyone to compel citizens to accompany them to withdraw or transfer money through Point of Sale (POS) operators or financial institutions.

She urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities or hostile checkpoints to the police through designated channels.

The hotlines provided for complaints and emergency reports include the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) on 07057605256, 08120822987 and 09035774814; the Police Public Relations Officer on 09014273818; and the Control Room on 08032003514.

The Rivers State Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to maintaining law and order, while appealing for public cooperation and support for legitimate police operations to enhance safety and security across the state.
