Troops of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following the hijacking of a passenger boat travelling from Nigeria to Cameroon.
The incident occurred on January 11, 2026, when suspected sea pirates attacked a passenger vessel along the Kombo Fishing Port area within the Cameroon waterways. According to military sources, the attackers operated in two speedboats and a wooden boat, forcibly abducting the passengers during the assault.
A distress call alerted troops deployed at Ikang, prompting a swift response by the 13 Brigade. The soldiers pursued the suspects, leading to an exchange of fire during which one of the pirates’ speedboats capsized. The assailants subsequently abandoned their captives and fled into nearby creeks.
All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed.
Commending the troops for their prompt action, the Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, said the operation reflected the professionalism and dedication of the Nigerian Army.
“This successful rescue operation demonstrates the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of our men and women to protect lives and ensure the safety of our waterways. We will continue to dominate our operational environment and safeguard our citizens against all criminal elements,” he said.
Brigadier General Alimikhena also called on members of the public to support security efforts by providing timely and useful information, stressing that community cooperation is critical to combating criminal activities across Cross River State.
The operation, the Army said, underscores the resolve of the 13 Brigade to secure lives and maintain safety along regional waterways.
