The integrity of the judicial process is under scrutiny at the Ikorodu Magistrate Court 1, where two high-profile sexual offence cases have been significantly impacted by familial reconciliation and monetary settlement negotiations.
The next adjourned date for a case of alleged paternal defilement and incest from Agbowa has been set for September 25, 2025.
The case involves a father accused of sexually abusing his 15-year-old daughter.
However, judicial officers, including the prosecutor and the magistrate, have voiced concerns that the case may not proceed successfully.
The key challenge stems from the victim’s mother, the wife of the accused, who has stated that she has forgiven her husband.
Officials believe this makes her a reluctant witness who would likely refuse to appear in court if the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recommends a trial at the Ikeja High Court.
This development threatens to derail the case before it can be fully prosecuted.
In a separate matter before the same court, a case involving four youths accused of gang rape was adjourned to allow for out-of-court settlement.
It emerged during the session that the victim’s father had been in negotiations with the families of the accused, initially demanding N2 million.
A counteroffer of N1 million was reportedly made.
The court instructed the parties to continue their negotiations and for their lawyers to provide an update on whether a settlement has been reached during the next court sitting, which is scheduled for this week.
The Agbowa case has been tenaciously followed and monitored by the Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN), which is determined to get justice for the girl who was violated by her biological father.
