Lagos Residents Help Nab Suspected Police Impostor, Command Commends Vigilance

-

The Lagos State Police Command has commended residents for their vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities following the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect accused of impersonating a police officer after allegedly stealing a police officer’s belongings.

According to the Command, the suspect, identified as Onipede Tajudeen Ojo, was apprehended after he allegedly stole a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and other personal items.

Police said the suspect reportedly wore the stolen camouflage uniform in an attempt to pose as a police officer. However, alert members of the public became suspicious after noticing that his conduct and mannerisms did not align with those of a genuine police officer.

“The vigilance, alertness and security consciousness of the good people of Lagos State remain critical to maintaining peace, safety and security across the state,” the Command said in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to the statement, concerned passersby accosted and questioned the suspect before discovering that he was allegedly an impostor. He was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.

The Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

While expressing appreciation to residents for their proactive support and timely reporting of suspicious activities, the police reiterated the importance of community collaboration in crime prevention.

“The recent incidents are clear testimonies to the vigilance, alertness and security consciousness of the good people of Lagos State. The Command deeply appreciates members of the public for their proactive support and timely reporting of suspicious activities to the Police,” the statement said.

The police also used the opportunity to caution residents against engaging in mob action or jungle justice, stressing that suspects should always be handed over to law enforcement authorities.

“While commending the vigilance and civic responsibility of members of the public, the Lagos State Police Command strongly condemns any form of jungle justice. The laws of Lagos State do not permit individuals to take the law into their own hands, irrespective of the alleged offence committed by a suspect,” the Command stated.

The police urged residents to continue supporting security efforts by promptly reporting suspicious persons, movements and activities, while allowing due process of law to take its course.
