The Delta State Commissioner of Police has ordered the redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jesse Division, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, and directed the X-Squad to investigate allegations of a ₦2.5 million extortion involving officers of the division.
The action followed a viral video in which a woman accused the DPO and two officers identified as Bright and Usman of allegedly extorting ₦2.5 million from her with the promise that her brother would be released from police custody.
Addressing journalists during a press briefing on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, said the Command took the allegations seriously after reviewing the video.
“The Command is aware of the viral video recording in which a woman alleged that officers of Jesse Division extorted the sum of two million, five hundred thousand naira from her,” Adesola said. “After a careful examination of the video clip, the Command deemed it necessary to take immediate action.”
He explained that the incident originated on January 1, 2026, when the youth leader of Jesse community arrested some suspects and handed them over to the police.
“Among the suspects was the narrator’s younger brother, later identified as Israel Onojeruo, aged 20 years,” the police commissioner stated.
According to him, Onojeruo was arrested following the confession of another suspect, Okoro Desmond.
“One of the suspects confessed that he sold a gun to Israel Onojeruo, which formed the basis of his arrest,” Adesola said, adding that the suspects were later transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) for further investigation.
Regarding the extortion allegations, the Commissioner stated that he personally listened to the complaint and acted promptly.
“On the allegation of extortion levelled against the DPO and two other officers, I listened to the complaint and took immediate action in line with our commitment to a people-friendly policing system,” he said.
He disclosed that the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad had been directed to thoroughly investigate the matter.
“I have ordered the AC X-Squad to investigate the allegation. The constable identified as Bright in the video has been detained at the Command Headquarters, while the DPO has been removed and redeployed to the headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation,” Adesola said.
The police boss noted that the redeployment of the DPO was also due to repeated complaints from the public.
“The removal of the DPO is in response to a series of complaints of extortion and unprofessional conduct received from different quarters,” he added.
CP Adesola assured the public that disciplinary measures would be applied where necessary.
“If the officers are found to have acted in an unprofessional manner, they will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the Police Act and regulations, to serve as a deterrent to others,” he warned.
He stressed that extortion and abuse of power would not be tolerated under his leadership.
“This Command will not tolerate any form of extortion, intimidation, incivility, or unprofessionalism by any officer,” the Commissioner declared.
He also encouraged citizens to report police misconduct.
“Members of the public are encouraged to reach the Command Complaint Response Unit whenever they have complaints against police actions,” Adesola said, providing the hotline numbers: 09011112311, 09155570008, 09064308018, and 09066575187.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Edafe Bright, ANIPR, FCIA, FIPMD.
